On May 16, PC MPP Michael Harris (Kitchener-Conestoga) introduced The Fair and Open Tendering Act, a Private Members Bill calling for an end to the practice of closed tendering of construction projects in municipalities and school boards in Ontario. ORBA was on hand at Queen’s Park to support the launch of this Bill, participating in the press conference and attending its introduction in the Legislature.

On May 13, MPP Steven Del Duca introduced Bill 69, the Prompt Payment Act, 2013. The Bill sets out a number of conditions for timely payments made under construction contracts. The Bill will receive second reading in the Legislature on May 16.

The MTO has suspended axle-weight enforcement for aggregate haulers in the province, for the remainder of 2013. The enforcement suspension is in response to an ongoing review being undertaken by the MTO into the aggregate-hauling industry. Ministry inspectors will, however, continue to charge aggregate haulers if their gross vehicle weight exceeds the allowable limit by more than 2,000 kilograms.
