Toronto, ON — The Ontario Road Builders’ Association (ORBA) applauds the historic memorandum of understanding (MOU) agreement between the Governments of Ontario and Alberta. An initiative that promises to reshape Canada’s economic future by investing in strategic infrastructure that unlocks the vast, untapped potential of Northern Ontario.

This partnership lays the foundation for the critical enabling infrastructure—such as all-season roads, rail corridors, and pipelines—needed to connect the James Bay and Ring of Fire regions to the rest of Canada. By improving year-round access to remote communities and resource-rich areas, Ontario is positioning itself as a leader in responsible development.

With new east-west trade routes and export corridors, including a proposed James Bay deep-water port, Canada can reduce its dependence on foreign infrastructure and strengthen national energy security. This vision supports long-term energy self-sufficiency and a more competitive economic position on the global stage.

The proposed infrastructure investments will generate high-quality jobs across Ontario—from engineering and construction to operations and logistics. The plan also prioritizes Indigenous partnerships and workforce development, ensuring local communities benefit from the opportunities created.

“This interprovincial infrastructure partnership is about far more than pipelines—it’s about unlocking the full economic promise of Northern Ontario,” said Walid Abou‑Hamde, CEO of the Ontario Road Builders’ Association. “By building roads, rail links and supporting a James Bay seaport, we’re breaking down barriers to global markets, reducing energy dependence, and creating sustainable job opportunities for communities across the north.”

ORBA stands ready to work alongside government, industry, and Indigenous communities to deliver the essential infrastructure that will turn this nation-building partnership into reality. Together, we can lay the groundwork for a more connected, self-reliant, and prosperous Ontario.
